Another feature I love about the Doona stroller is that it comes with removable fabrics. I always found it extremely inconvenient to clean a canopy or a stroller seat while attached. Better yet, if you travel a lot, you’ll be glad to know that the Doona car seat is FAA Aircraft Approved. There’s also a travel bag that you can buy separately for a smooth and easy trip.

Unfortunately, though, the Doona car seat is rear-facing only. When your child is old enough to face the front, you’ll have to replace it with another one.

Strollers come with a lot of features. Some are useful, and some are incredibly glorified by marketing. Since it’s challenging to know which are which without trying the product, I’ve made a list of all the points you need to consider during shopping.

Type of Stroller

The first point you need to think about thoroughly is what type of stroller you need. Strollers come in various types, including full-size, jogging, lightweight, and travel system. Here’s what each type is meant for:

• Full-size strollers: These are the standard type that you see every day on the street, and they come with single, double, or triple seats.
• Jogging strollers: Jogging strollers are meant for athletic parents who don’t want to miss out on their daily run. That’s why they’re lighter and more compact than average.
• Lightweight strollers: Light strollers, also known as umbrella strollers, come in handy for traveling or working parents who want a lighter option than their full-size.
• Travel systems: Travel systems are a combo package that includes a stroller seat and an infant car seat that attach to the same frame.

In my opinion, you must get a full-size stroller, be it a single, double, triple, or quad. Full-size strollers are irreplaceable because they’re the most practical and durable type out there.

Jogging and lightweight strollers are convenient in specific situations, but you can’t use them as your everyday set of wheels. Most models are only suitable for use after six or eight months of birth. Also, they’re made from lightweight materials that aren’t as sturdy as full-size frames.

If you need either type, you can get them beside your main stroller.

Alternatively, you can look for a stroller that doubles as full-size and jogging, like the Bob Gear Revolution Flex 3.0 Stroller. Unfortunately, though, lightweight strollers can’t double as any other type.

Safety

Safety is a priority for all parents, and it’s the most important feature to consider after deciding on a type. Before you buy a stroller, you should make sure it comes with a five-point safety harness, a reclining seat, and easily accessible brakes.

The harness will protect your baby from falling out of the stroller, while the reclining seat will ensure your baby’s head and spine are supported. As for the brakes, they’ll make for safer and smoother stops on sloped streets.

Size and Weight

As a parent, you’re expected to use the stroller nearly every waking hour of your day. Suppose your stroller is too bulky or heavy. You’ll have a challenging time pushing it around, and it might not fit in some places.

Before deciding on a stroller, you need to check its dimensions and weight. If you can’t carry it around for a long time, or it won’t fit in your car trunk when folded, I suggest you look for another option. 

Portability

If you travel a lot, portability is a feature you want to consider when buying a stroller. Some strollers come with luxurious portability features like carry straps or travel bags. I find these extremely convenient when traveling, as I’ll be able to carry the stroller and still have two free hands to hold my kids.

Another important portability feature to check is the stroller’s folding mechanism. Most of the time, you’ll need to hold your child in one hand and fold the stroller with the other. That’s why I recommend looking for a one-hand folding mechanism.

Durability

Most parents want to get one stroller in their lifetime and use it with all of their children, which is possible if the vehicle is durable enough to stand the test of time. Some features that boost durability are sturdy frames, removable and washable fabrics, and large, impact-absorbing wheels.

Budget

Strollers come in a wide range of prices, but higher prices don’t necessarily mean extra safety. All strollers on the market meet the general safety guidelines, making them equal at this point. Instead, the high prices mean more luxury.

High-end strollers often come with premium features that you don’t need but will appreciate if present. Common examples are ultra-padded seats, footrests, rain covers, and mosquito nets.

The verdict is, don’t extend your budget beyond your abilities to get an expensive stroller. Many affordable models perform as excellently as pricey ones, like the Graco Modes Parmette Stroller.

Canopy

Unless you do all your daily strolls in the dark, you need a large and retractable canopy to protect your baby from the sun. The larger it is, the better so that your baby doesn’t outgrow it fast.

Another feature I look for in canopies is peek-a-boo windows. They’re not essential, but they can make your life easier if you spend a lot of time out with your baby.

Wheels

Strollers come with three or four wheels, and each number has its pros and cons.

Three-wheeled strollers are more flexible and maneuverable in small spaces because they’re narrower at the front. They’re ideal if you live on a narrow street or like to go hiking amidst the trees. However, they can get wobbly on rough terrains. On the other side, four-wheeled strollers are less maneuverable but more stable on the ground.

You should also consider the filling of the wheel. Some strollers come with foam-filled tires, while some come air-filled. You’ll also see plastic wheels on the market, but I recommend you ditch these because they aren’t durable at all and make for very bumpy rides.

Meanwhile, foam-filled tires are the most durable and absorb impacts and bumps perfectly. Because of this, they’re also the heaviest to push.

Air-filled tires are durable and perform decently on different terrains, but you’ll need to get them filled every once in a while, which can be inconvenient.

Extra Features

Some features aren’t essential in a stroller, but they can make your life much easier. My personal favorite ones are lunch trays, cup holders, storage baskets, and peek-a-boo windows. I don’t mind the luxury of having places to put my cup, diaper bag, and other belongings while strolling.

As for the windows, they give me a chance to check up on my kids without turning the stroller around. The lunch trays are also useful when you want to distract your little ones with some snacks to munch on.
